Cool Website Tip #2: Minus.com

Icon 7 Comments
Previous website tip.

Today I'll show you a nifty little tool for developers out there who have blogs.

My blog (sergiotapia.com) is hosted by a little company called A Small Orange. They're very good with no down time in the whole year I've been with them and their prices are very affordable. I pay 25$ a year for hosting. Bandwidth and disc space are not too shabby, but I've noticed that my hard drive space is filling up - and fast.

Most of my articles have lots of pictures in them, and I've almost exclusively used imgur.com to host them. Problem is, the pictures might get deleted and I would lose all the work I've put in.

Minus gives you 10GB of free space to upload files to.

This is the screen you see when you are logged on their website.

It has a very clean, drag and drop interface where you can just drop files and you'll zip them up the cloud.

The tool they offer is magnificent.

If you head on over to their Tools section, you'll find their official client app. This little rascal gives you a tray icon that offers you all sorts of goodies, for free!

They offer clients for all three major OS's, so you Gentoo users can also use it. ;)

When you right click the icon a task list shows up. Take a screenshot and it automatically uploads it for you:

When you hover your mouse over the icon you get a nice landing zone where you can drop files:

How long do they keep your files?

According to their Help page:

Quote

We keep all files indefinitely unless deleted by the uploader or if it violates our terms of service.

Looks interesting but I think that I am going to stick with dreamhost since I have exceeded 10 GB of disk space and well over 100GB of transfers since signing up a few years ago. $110(ish) plus domains a year and I love their tools and support.

DreamHost was my first hoster. I joined them during their 9$ for a whole year + free domain reg for first time customers. After that ran out, the 12$ per month cost was too steep and pointless for my little blog.

Their tools and support are phenomenal though, not a single complain in that department.

There's something like this that I liked to use for awhile. It's called puush. I'm not sure of the status of it but when I had it, you use hotkeys to activate it, drag on the screen where you want to screenshot, and it will automatically upload it and put the link in your keyboard.
