Atheism+

Icon 18 Comments
That's not a typo nor is it Newspeak, there really is a group out there claiming to be atheists and more. They're atheists, but they also incorporate "..social issues like sexism, racism, GLBT issues, politics, poverty, and crime." * as though we didn't already, or that you have to be an atheist to do so. It all actually sounds good, I mean, there's lots of less-rational bigoted and hateful atheists out there so it's good to show you're responsible as human beings for others.. ..

You'll quickly find out it's some bizarre reaction movement. Take a look at all these arguments you're not allowed to make as though anyone with different points of view are automatically wrong. You can't just pre-empt arguments and then automatically assume victory before anyone has even started a rebuttal. It's like they ran out of religious fanatics to feel morally superior to so now they start beating down all "the others" who don't agree with their extremist views.

I know I'm using strong words, but go ahead and look up and read about this movement yourself! The introductions sound nice, but when you look at the actual followers themselves, it's sort of ridiculous. This whole "oh, we're not like THOSE guys" (and many of them would chastise me for using 'guys' instead of 'people' even though I'm adamant for gender equality) argument used to be something we could criticize religions for and now we have people doing the same for atheism. I've even heard there's multiple Atheist+s- what is there an Atheist double plus good or something?

What's worse, it appears all of this grew out of the Thunderfoot vs. P.Z. Myers debacle and now apparently we hate Hitches and Dawkins because they weren't politically correct instead of admiring their more positive, rational arguments and work. Albert Einstein could have been an asshole but it wouldn't effect the theory of relativity, and Newton was a bit crazy believing in alchemy, but we use calculus in science all the time. This all reeks of someone's (or some peoples') own political agenda. How often do they actually talk about atheism vs. all these other societal issues that define everyone differently?

For those of you who know me, you're probably impressed there is a group of people I think take things too far. This coming from the bisexual furry who would remark out at anyone who used the wrong gendered pronoun, or the one who likes to join along side B9 on our gender/sexuality rants- this group makes me feel normal! I don't actually care that people put L before the B in LGBT or GLBT or whateverAAAAAAGGGHHH!! I am me, OK? OK! Glad we sorted this out. It's almost like a very elaborate Internet troll-bait prank, and it's really confusing. Why can't we just be rational atheists and have different points of view and argue any position and be judged only on the strength of our reason?

so wait...calling a woman a female is sexists? whats up with that?

as a side note I have a professor, a male professor, that has a tendency to write 'she' or 'her', etc... rather than the currently correct 'he or she' or 'his or her'...it used to just be you used the male(he/his/him/etc...). I'm not sure weather he is doing that to even more politically correct or weather its just a small mistake...also, there are no girls in that class.

Those guys... sorry, people, are crazy.

I can understand the whole wanting social justice, and equality for all and all that jazz, but reading through some of the threads on that site makes me feel we should be frog marching around, one hand in the air yelling 'Heil Atheism!'.

And don't call women "females." You have a lot of other words to choose from. When we're talking about human beings, let's not treat them like cattle. Okay? Okay.

Also: Using "females" as a noun for "female humans" is (generally) not OK out of a scientific context. In a non-science context it is dehumanizing and also is sexist because its counterpart ("males") is rarely used in similar settings. I assume that you are in favor of not doing shitty things to women, so I would be very appreciative if you would try to avoid using that word (at the very least when you participate here). Thanks!

People with different views can automatically be wrong. View are not always opinions.

These peoples' attitudes remind me of a former colleague (who was white) who informed me that I was racist because I was white and so must have taken advantage of white privilege whether I realized it or not. Nothing I did could possibly make me not racist, so I may as well just accept that fact and get on with doing whatever I could to make up for it.

This came up when I was telling him about not getting an interview because, according to one person on the hiring committee (off the record, of course), my skin was not the right color and I was male.

Views that are contrary to known fact may be wrong, but that doesn't make people with different views automatically wrong. Those are totally different things. People with different views are not automatically wrong just because they have different views.

.. I honestly don't know, I mean you wouldn't mind being referred to as "a male". Cleansing your grammar doesn't actually do anything to further gender equality anyways, you kind of have to actually DO stuff to help a cause. Minding your words doesn't solve the real injustices, but you're all just nodding your head because we're the (relatively) sane ones here.

I guess it's now possible to be a "fundie atheist" now.

Nope, even if it's a completely stupid argument, you still have to actually debunk it- I mean we've been debunking creationism ad-nausea. Oh, I wish it were automatic but alas you still have to do the tedious work.

I have no respect for "devout Atheists" who consider themselves part of a group, or a cult. Atheism isn't a religion, it's the lack of religious alignment. Call yourselves "anti-religious" or something. If you think it's cool to brand yourself as an atheist you're no more sane than a guy who thinks Jesus talks to him.

Automatically discounting statements and arguments from someone because they're "privileged" to be white/male/etc. is pretty damn sexist/racist/etc. and makes me as sick as conventional racism.

Having spent some time in political organizing, I have seen firsthand the need for (for instance) conscientiously encouraging non-white, non-male folk to speak. It's not necessarily a matter of discounting white male opinions, but correcting for an imbalance in expression of opinions. I mean, it's not a matter of saying you (for instance) should be taken less seriously because of whiteness and maleness, but that everyone else should be afforded the same respect. This is no way an endorsement of this particular organization, but merely a recognition of the need for a sort of 'political correctness' within organizations. I can't say I've resented so much as appreciated the times people have called me out for shit I say. What might seem to me to be 'the way I talk' might be pretty offensive to someone. Wouldn't you rather know, especially if it is something as trivial as coming up with a new phrase for 'that took balls' or whatever?

That's the thing, they do believe white males should be taken less seriously.

Yeah but this is how sane people act as opposed to creating bizarro-atheism where anyone with dissenting views from the moderators are expunged. You know, instead of simply having a critical discussion and encouraging free speech.

Im an Atheist, these people are borderline Fanatics

I don't like religion at all, i personally believe it is used as a tool nowadays. I will never stop someone from following their own faith, however, like all faiths, it is a personal thing so keep it to yourself.

These people are pretty much the same as God-Fearing religious fanatics, and to be honest saying that certain questions cant be asked, or certain bias is given is a sort of belief so even calling these people atheists, is quite funny to say the least.

they pretty much are a religion, they just believe in themselves, they're airheads.

Ironically, and almost contradictory, these guys have kinda created a religion based on atheism...if that even makes sense.

Im new here, but its glad to hear that their is someone who is ahead for equality.

Im South African, and its very ironic how equality is done nowadays..especially in South Africa:0

and Dont call me male or female, just call me human!

and if anyone's wondering, NO i dont think atheism will cure all social problems, but i dont think any religion will ever have the ability to do that.

I don't think it's possible to defend Atheism+ and remain sane, it's a direction of extremism. To sound more rational and moderate would remove yourself from Atheism+.
