End of the Summer

I haven't really kept up on my blog this summer, so as the summer is over, I figured I'd get in one last post about everything.

My Internship: My last day was August 27th. I turned in my key to the office, and I thanked my boss for the opportunity to work this summer. I really had a blast working on the Android platform in a research and design environment. My boss was really relaxed and loved my work, and I got to write a lot of real world Java. I also got the opportunity to work with certain APIs I had been meaning to get around to, like Reflection and Java XML (specifically SAX), as well as hit hard on data structures. I ended up designing a generic Tree structure that we ended up not needing. In addition, I got my first real taste of component integration and group development the last couple weeks in August when my coworker and I had to compile and integrate our efforts. It went pretty smoothly, overall, considering there were just two of us. By the time I left, I'd say the project was 90% of the way done. Considering the Army, who is the client, isn't expecting anything for another four months, I'd say a lot of work got done.

My Freelancing Project: This got put on hold during August while I did my summer work for school. By August, I had done about 40% of the project, getting the drag and drop interface to work. The assistant principal was thrilled with what I had done, and was fine with me putting it on hold to do my summer work. I'll probably pick this back up in the next day or so. Drag and Drop Tutorials and Snippets will probably follow in the next couple weeks, for those who have asked about them.

Summer Work: This was a major pain. I had summer work for AP Physics C, AP US Government, and Honors English. The Physics work was basically working out a few problems and watching a few Youtube videos. It was a nice refresher on Vectors, and having worked with Polar Coordinates previously was beneficial as well. For AP Government, I had to read The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court. If you haven't already read it, I would highly recommend it. It also makes me wish Sandra Day O'Connor was back on the court. I also had to research the Justices, including some former ones and Kagan. English summer work was really a pain, and just a fundraiser for the PTSA to sell books, in my opinion. I didn't bother reading the two required books. But I managed just fine with Wikipedia and Spark Notes, finishing all that today.

Vacation: We took a week early in August to go down to Myrtle Beach on vacation. If you weren't convinced before, the Sun is evil. Yes, I got a massive sun burn on my legs. So while we were on the beach, I was under the umbrella with a towel over my legs reading my book for Government so my sun burn wouldn't get worse. I did enjoy the evenings more walking around two of the shopping centers more, and going out to dinner. Probably my favorite part was going into the Fudgery. I swore off Little Debbie's snack cakes, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, and Snickers bars in return for a free sample of Fudge. And I left with a block of vanilla fudge as well. It was to die for.

Thanks everyone!

@taylorc8 & trvr: The company I interned for offered a couple positions to students from the IT center at my high school. My boss interviewed us, and I was the first one and hired on the spot. He was really impressed with my Java, and I thoroughly enjoyed what I did there, so it was a really good fit.

That's really cool that you were able to do all of that this summer! Hope this next school year is a good one for you!
