COBOL and FORTRAN

Icon Leave Comment
Many of you out there in DIC world will be wondering why I have posted a couple of tutorials written in COBOL and FORTRAN (trust me there are more to come!). "Aren't these dead languages written by the ancients around the time the universe began?" I hear you ask. Well, it is estimated that there are billions of lines of COBOL still running out there (although I am not so sure about FORTRAN). The ANSI committees are still very much active in keeping these languages alive and kicking, so we should here at DIC, have some tutorials on this rather important pair of programming languages. Besides, even though COBOL is perhaps not quite as compact as other programming languages, I think it is rather elegant.

I have been also looking at writing some tutorials in ALGOL, PROLOG, ADA and FORTH, but have yet to find suitable a suitable compiler/interpreter for these languages. The next tutorial I will post is written in PASCAL (whoopee I hear you cry!). All of these languages I have used in various customer related applications in the past, with the exception of ADA which I have only used for personal projects.

May the ancient programming languages live long and prosper.
