Programming Practice Arena.

Icon 4 Comments
I have been thinking about creating programming practice arena.

Basically in the arena there are problems you have to solve by programming. The problem is described to you and example input and output are given to you. You then code solution to the problem and test it with the example input. Once you are ready you can download the real problem input and run your solution over this input. Once your program has given you the results you submit your solution and results into the web application and the results are checked if they are correct.

Yes I know this is similar to how Google Code Jam works, but there won't be time limit on running your program. Secondly this will not be a competition, but practice arena.

This sounds like a good idea, you could scale problems by difficulty too. It would be interesting to see implemented. I'm parp at web design (yay for cms <3) but I think you could keep it entirely online by using a language like asp.net or php (?)

I am always looking at ways to get people programming, and this is a neat idea :)

I've been having quite a bit of fun working through some of the problems on the GCJ website, and looking through the list of ones available earlier I was wishing that there was a lot more of them. Would be great to have some one make up something similar.

iniaes I'm not going to compile and execute the users programs as that becomes dangerous, but there will be PHP code to generate the inputs for the problems and check the outputs.

The nice thing is that I could do different level of problems like start from simple fizzbuzz and then go deeper.

You don't have to compile it in real time, you could just have an emulator set to recognise correct solutions.
