Well the tags are the words usually associated with something posted on your blog. Most likely articles. A user that later visits your blog will be able to find your articles by specifying tags for that article.

To give you an example, I could associate these tags with your thread:
blog, help, explanation, tags, categories, archive

The categories are the "containers" of different articles. For example, you posted this thread in the Blogging subforum. Consider it as a category for every thread realted to blogging.

The Archive is just the place for old articles.
