Every now and then people come to forums asking about good C and C++ compilers and IDE's to use because they have been using old *crappy* compilers which they were forced to use due to their course in some school/college/university.

So, today I thought of creating a list of all the compilers/IDE's I know of which are free to download with my five favourites(marked in red).

Here is the list

1) Code::Blocks

2) VC++2005 Express Edition

3) MinGW

4) Intel C++ -linux only

5) GNU GCC

6) Digital Mars C++

7) Bloodshed DEV C++

8) Cygwin C++

9) Sun Studio

10) Apple C++

11) Borland C++

12) DJGPP

13) Open Watcom C/C++

14) Pelles C- Compiler based on LCC

15) LCC-Win32

That's an exhaustive list, but shouldn't this thread be in the C++ Forums and not the Tutorials section?

Direct links given in the post gives a very good explanation about respective compilers. I think list is enough and people won't mind clicking on the links...or will they?

I liked your list but as a newbie i still had a frustrating hour of trying to get some of these compilers to work, maybe i'm using the wrong tutorials but then i came across this site
it's got a piece on how to set up your compiler and dealing with errors my whole problem was not adding cin.net(); silly newbie mistake i know but its not mentioned in my tut but know i can see it all working. anyway thanks again

Don't forget the Eclipse IDE.

There's even an "Easy Eclipse" distribution specifically for use with C++:
EasyEclipse for C and C++

I use Easy Eclipse CDT with MinGW at work and at home, and on Windows and Linux.
