As the header says, how important is it to add a sitemap to google?

I have a webpage (here) which I recently added a blog to(due to frustration over TPB), now do I have to enter a new sitemap to google after every entry on that blog to get it registered on google, or will the spiders find them entries anyway since the main page is listed?

Google will find most pages on any site as long as:
- there's a link to it
- it's not buried within many sub-levels of navigation

So, as long as your pages are easily found by a human, they'll be easily found by Google. Any page that doesn't have a link to it will eventually be dropped by the SERPs even if you submit it via a sitemap.

That being said, it's never a bad idea to submit a sitemap to Google, Yahoo or any other search engine. It might prompt them to recrawl your site if they haven't visited for awhile.

Well, that's cool. So I'm not totally wasting my time adding sitemaps then.

I have come to understand that google crawls anyways, and so does yahoo.

I must however say that Googles system for adding sitemaps is ALOT more user-friendly than Yahoo's. I still haven't applied one to yahoo since I find it to be so much trouble.

There are two types of site maps, bot-site maps and human-site maps. Bot-site maps are what search engines use to crawl your site. Human-site maps are used by users to navigate through your site easier. You're right, Google makes it a whole lot easier to submit site maps than any other search engine.

There is an even easier way to submit site maps, use a robots.txt file. All you have to do is declare it with "Sitemap : http://www.site.com/site-map.xml" and the spiders automatically find it.

Hope this spreads some light on site maps.
