How do I implement an application that can control a device connected to the parallel port of a PC throw the internet?

This device controls certain home appliances through a local PC in the home. But then the major catch is being able to communicate with this PC(hence this device) from any web browser from a remote location. This is where am stuck! Can anybody help me out please(in specific details)?
