C|Net announced that IBM is partnering with Zend to better support PHP. Besides a few minor mistakes (PHP does not stand for, "Personal Home Page" but rather the recursive GNU-style acronym: "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor") the one point that stands out to me is that IBM is compelled to "spin" PHP as a language for small-to-medium sized applications. Why? Websphere. The company simply has to position PHP in a subservient role to their ultra-expensive web development architecture -- otherwise they compete with themselves. Clearly, PHP has proven more agile than Java. But when enterprise shops continue coding PHP and forget, as IBM hopes, to switch to webpshere (or worse, switch and switch back) -- what will become of this match made in heaven? Time will tell.

2. What does PHP stand for?

PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. This confuses many people because the first word of the acronym is the acronym. This type of acronym is called a recursive acronym. The curious can visit Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing for more information on recursive acronyms.

The pre in pre hypertext processor refers to the fact that the html is filtered before being sent to the browser.

I think it means you choose with PHP what HTML to use/display....or at least that is it's general use.

Ahhh damn it, every book I've read says pre hypertext processor. Pre being the fact that the code is processed before the HTML is sent to the browser.
