I am looking at colleges mostly in the Midwest. I like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and also Purdue University. I was also thinking of looking at Iowa State University, and any others that fit the bill.

Which is/are the best choice(s)? Are there other schools you can list?

Thank you very much!

I go to Iowa State University, and its a great a school. I'm actually majoring in Software Engineering so I get more coding than a Computer Engineer and more structure/engineering than a com sci student would. Its a great program you should look into.

Obviously UC Berkley is one of the best, if not the best.

Most of the well known top schools were already mentioned. I know from experience that in the Midwest, Purdue has a very good/demanding computer science program that'll make you learn a lot of low level basics. They have pretty strong industry connections too; most of the friends I had in the CS program got good jobs both during school in the summer, and right at graduation. Most of the other top CS schools are on the coasts.

What is the consensus on ITT Tech? I have seen the commercials for almost a decade. My concern is that the credits do not transfer and the cost is about $18,000 more than Limestone College. The issue with Limestone is that the classes for what I want is only online. I am going for Computer Network Security.

Well lets put it this way, my friend has a degree from ITT and he is still going to college because no one will hire him with the degree he has. He has an AS in Computer Science I think and no one wants him because ITT is what many call a "predator" college, where you pay money, get a degree, but no one recognizes the degree as a "real" degree.

Yeah, ITT Tech I know doesn't provide the quality degree that other previously mentioned schools would have.

Is it the school or the fact that he only got an AS? The school actually offers a BS and a specialization in computer network security.

Well most of the jobs he was seeking basically told him his degree was not worth much because it is from a vocational school thus making you a narrow subject for employment. You know that one thing and only that one thing, where as when you go for a degree from a real college, you have a wider area of specialization, while you are still mainly in this one topic, you can be easily molded to learn what THEY want to you to know for the position and company.

Credits earned at ITT are unlikely to transfer

All you need to know is there. If the school is not regionally accredited, look for a national accreditation (regional > national). If there's no accreditation look elsewhere.

Ok, I surrender. Is an online degree in an accrediteded college that only offers online courses for my specailization than University of South carolina that does not have the specialization? Are there any suggestions for Computer Network Security for a 40+ YO who needs to work. I fix computers and design websites but don't want to keep doing this forever.

Ummm...IDK, It really just depends. You should research the success rate at which these online graduates recieve in the employment field and see how these degrees rank among university degrees. I know online degrees usually aren't much cheaper than university degrees, but they may be a little faster.

As for specialization, I can't answer that portion as I am in college myself.

Average students don't make for bad campus's. I was a 3.0 student, not too great and im gonna be hittin SDSU which is in the top 5 for graduation and employment rates. So technically grades don't mean much of anything, either not applying yourself or not doing your HW can give you a bad average. Perhaps he was like I was and just did the minimal work to get through each course because school bored him?

To base a place off of ONE persons GPA is a terrible way to rate a campus, and i'd suggest doing your research first before making such drastic accusations. Or atleast back them up with evidence.

What made you think I based my opinion off one person? I'd suggest doing your research first before making such drastic accusations. I didn't use my friend as an evidence, just as a filler. Here's why ITT Tech is a bottom university:

1.) It accepts students with a 2.2 GPA and a 910 SAT score.

2.) You can go on the Internet and read the reviews. Most of them will reinforce my claim.

3.) Check out the core classes for the Software Engineering degree. Here are some:

Introduction to C# Programming
Programming .NET Framework with VB.NET and C#
Advanced Programming to VB.NET
Advanced JAVA I
Advanced JAVA II
Programming in ASP.NET

I rest my case.
