I want to learn some HTML since it's raining today and what the hell, why not?

I don't have the moola to pay 7000$ for dreamweaver so I'd like to try a free program that offers similar tools.

Any suggestions?

If you want to learn the HTML code then I would suggest using notepad or notepad++ as a starting point.

Downloaded Notepad++. Is it best if I learn to view only code and then use a WYSIWYG editor?

Try NVU

http://www.nvu.com/

You should as stated above learn XHTML first- good to know behind the hood stuff before letting an editor do it all for you...

If you ever want to be considered a web guy don't use a wysiwyg. at first your gonna say i wish i could see this in wysiwyg, but as you go on you will realize they only ruin code, make your life harder, and slow you down.

learn to code on your own.

like he said, if on a pc grab notepad++, if your on a mac i would grab something like coda, which costs <100 but ramps up productivity.

i actually do use dreamweaver, but I never, ever, touch the WYSIWYG, i leave only my code window open and use it for the other features such as ftp/syntax highlighting and that sort of thing.

Kompozer sucks really badly though.

I would rather just use a text editor. Notepad++ has a lot of really good features. Dreamweaver is good for quite a lot of things though, and can save quite a bit of time. Though hand coding is always better.

Same here. And it isn't $7000 dollars -
Dreamweaver: $399
Web Suite: $1699

In my opinion it's worth the purchase if you plan on making this a career - if not - I would just use notepad and a free FTP client.
