Well, you could look up a tutorial on sockets. Based on your post, I assume you know HTTP, but if not, there are plenty of resources that document this protocol. On Windows, there are some other ways to do it, but they are not platform independent (whereas socket code from Windows to Unixen is very similar).

Assuming you need a tutorial, I recommend (just like every other person who knows it) Beej's Guide to Network Programming. It's very thorough, you ought to have a look
