I would personally recommend holding off on the Adsense until your site becomes a little more established. You cannot just erect a website and expect people to flock to it.

Once your site is up and running, focus on bringing in content. CONTENT! CONTENT! CONTENT!

Content is a crucial step to driving traffic to your website.

First and foremost before you even consider a web marketing campaign is to define your target audience. Once you have that established you need to research and see what other sites similar are doing. This will serve as a roadmap for you to build on the foundation you have laid out.

Now since I rambled I will try to get back on course here - as a programmer I would recommend keeping a blog or journal to discuss progress of current projects. Of course post your projects and perhaps your portfolio as well. Keeping a blog/journal will keep fresh content coming in and web crawlers love fresh content. Keep it on topic as well, if you are running a programming/development site - don't start talking about sports.

Hopefully this helps....

It is also helpful if you can have other sites linking back to your site. Link sharing is a good thing. Don't try and promote your web site too soon though. If you don't have good, quality content and you are promoting a web site with very little on it, that is not a good thing. Being a member in forums and having links in your signature, if it is allowed on the forum, is also a good way to get links back to your site. You do however, have to be active in this. Being passive will not improve your page rank. Getting in the top ten in Google takes time and dedication. Like Nykc said, content is very very very very important.
