Hi,
i read the differences between languages but couldnt figure out what would work best for me blink.gif

my goal right now is to make a forum,
not from 0
just get an exsisting forum and editing it the way i like it to be,
adding pictures in different places, making libraries, rating systems, maybe some animation etc..
so which forum theme is the best/easiest (and free) [btw kind of like the phpbb themes]

which languages would i need, and at what level would i need to know these languages with something like this?

and how about making text-based games? what kinds of langs would be needed for a game like that?

i know that i cant make these stuff by myself and need some time and experience,
but one has to start from somewhere,
and where i start better not be off my road rolleyes.gif

PHP / MySQL will be the easiest for you.

Can't really get specific unless you give us more info.

If you're making a forum with pictures and 'animations', you'll probably need to learn HTML, PHP&MySQL, Javascript (if by animations you mean buttons changing colour when you click on them etc)

If you don't know HTML, I'd stick with learning that first, it's the easiest and make some practice normal websites, then you can read some PHP tutorials. Install your forum then look through the code and try to understand it!

As for the easiest forum to customise, I'd say XMB forums (http://www.xmbforum.com/) lol I was able to understand most of the code for these with a beginner knowledge of php, and theming it is really easy though it might not be as attractive as other forums.

Every Web developer has to know the building blocks of the Web: HTML 4.01
CSS
XHTML
XML and XSLT
JavaScript
ASP or PHP
Managing data with SQL
The future of the Web

from: http://www.w3schools.com/

should i learn all of these?

by the way after learning these langs
which way of making pages recommended?
using a program to do the most stuff, when its not enough scripting kicks in
or just code all the pages one by one with notepad++ ?

If you want to learn asp, I would learn the .NET framwork. You can download Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition and use that to create your pages.

I would stick with CSS, (X)HTML, and Javascript for now. Learn all you can about those and then work your way to the .NET model.

SQL is very easy, if you want to learn that you can use these sites for online practice (I used it when starting out)
http://www.sqlcourse.com - This is the beginning site, start here and work yourway through.
http://www.sqlcourse2.com - This is the more advanced site, I wouldn't head there until you're pretty confident with the basics.

As for your practice with CSS, (X)HTML, Javascript, I would suggest just opening up Notepad and start there. You can save it as a .html file and will open locally in your brower when you open it. That's the easiest way to practice those.

XML and XSLT are very powerful. XML is great for holding and storing data. I would start off with making a site map for Google using XML (Google has many tutorials on it) then work your way through that as well. XSLT on the other hand, that is another language all to itself. I would suggest learning that later on as one of the last things.

That's all I have for now, I hope this helps you get an idea.
