Is anyone familiar with IMVU avatar creation? If so, I have Gimp and would like to know if those types of avatars can be created using gimp.

Well I would assume you'd just draw a body, scan it, bring it into GIMP and color/shade it. Then do the same for each clothing item. I'm not entirely sure what you were asking but this is my answer based on what I got out of your question.
