I'm new here. I need some forummers here to browse through the course structure of this comp.sc degree - http://fit.mmu.edu.my/academic/aca-cs-3y.html and please leave some comments about it. (whether it is good or not)

I graduated back in 2003, and everything on that list looks pretty good. The main differences (as far as I can remember) that I noticed are:

1) Regular languages (or is it called grammars?), which includes the infamous pumping lemma. I think this might be part of the Complexity Theory class though.
2) Compilers. Is it on the list somewhere? I don't see it.

In hindsight, I was an amateur programmer back in college, but I can appreciate seeing courses like distributed and parallel programming. Back in the day, I just wanted to get everything over with; didn't care what class I had to take in order to finish. Now, I wish I could remember all those algorithms and theories (at least I still know how a stack and queue work smile.gif).

Is there any particular area of programming that you're interested in pursuing?

Is it common for object oriented programming to be taught that late? My intro class was taught OO. Also is data structures and algorithms usually together?

From a few other curriculum I have looked at I am guessing that the course is primarily focused on C++.
Is that right?

If that is right then I suspect the unit titled "OOP" is really a Java unit slightly strangely titled.

Looks like a pretty standard CompSci layout to me.
Will set you up for a career quite nicely.

Your intro class didn't teach OOP, it only used some basics concepts like classes and inheritance, but never went in-depth. It's pretty normal for OOP to be taught in Junior/Senior year.

Data Structures and Algorithms are indeed usually taught together. Having a class that teaches DS exclusively is a waste, because DS themselves are simple and don't require much time. It's how to use them and algorithms that are associated with them that is the real subject matter.

No heavy math. Don't see Calculus or Physics or other Sciences.
Or much in Writing.

Lol. No wonder I feel familiar with the address link. biggrin.gif

Just so that you know how our country education system works. 99% of the time, before you can enter university, it's compulsory to take one year of matriculation education. Calculus, Physics, Writing or other Science subject is focused solely in that year. That's why these subject is not in university year at all.

And I can see Technical Communications in the 1st year. I think they teach the writing skill in that subject.
