That way if you don't get in to one you have the other as a fallback. Not sure if that is the advice you are looking for though.

If there's anybody who should be called "god of programming" it's not him. I really hope you're not planning on going to TAMU just because he is there. Back on topic. TAMU has a bit better program than UH. So if you have to choose, go to TAMU. With that said, there are a lot of better options. Neither of these universities are even in the top 50. Edit: If you want the best education around the Texas area, try to get into University of Texas - Austin. It has one of the best programs in the nation.
