on having your own DNS

You could run DNS off of a home computer for free.

Most web hosts will offer your DNS as part of your plan, and if you get a dedicated server, it will usually have bind installed and integrated with CPanel/Plesk/Ensim so you can setup DNS locally.

Which OS are you hosting with? There are plenty of DNS software packages out there.

If you just want to host your own website, for personal reasons, I would just as soon use an outside dns service like Skyhawk suggested. The benefit-to-security risk just isn't worth the hassle for one website, in my opinion.
