I am starting a new java programing class. I joined this forum because I heard that it was great for support question. I would like to start by saying thank you for any help that you are willing to shot my way. Is there any books/software that are helpful with begining programing that might help me in my java class?

Thanks
Paul

first off let me say hello and welcome to DIC!

For programming it is always up to preference what you program with. I suggest you use a program called Eclipse, its a great way to start out, and is good for all levels of programming.

As for books there are a lot out there, I think that head first java is a good one, as well as java software solutions. I suggest you look around here at peoples questions and a lot of the tutorials and snippets, as these are also great ways to learn.

Overall its important that you have fun programming, and when your stuck come here and im sure everyone will be willing to help you!

Good luck in class!

I started to take this class with my last set but had to drop it due to lack of knowledge of the subject. The class wants you to jump right into producing programs and is very advanced for what I would call a starter class. I need help producing programs so any books that would help me understand and produce them would be great. The last program that I put together and tried to compile just gave my syntax error messages. Not real sure what to do. I tried to google the problem or error but it was not helpful so I am tring it again and would like to be able to understand what I am doing and how I am doing (understand my errors). Thank you

Hi mfm,
I have this book (java how to program 7th edition) for my online Java class and I have had to get supplemental books like the dummies books and head start Java plus tutorials to help me understand things better. Perhaps there are others like myself, who have not had Java or any other programming course may find it difficult to just jump into that book.

I picked up most of my library/object knowledge - outside of the basic how to in logic blocks and such, on the Java API. If anything else, JAVA is very well documented. The API is useful for understanding class higerarchies, inheritence, and implementation. When you get into big projects, its always in your best interest to look for methods/clases that ease the workload. I believe this to be especially true when working with GUI, as, at least in my opinion, Java's GUI is very touchy and needs many things to be done by the developer.
