so i was talking to my parents and they are determined that i go to see a psychiatrist coz of the stress i'm having at the university and some of my actions that my parents dont like and stuff like that..i'm probably gonna start going this week..so anyway if any of you guys had a similar experience and would like to share, then go ahead.
I've not been myself, but my old boss went to see one (or a psychologist, can't remember) when he felt himself becoming really disassociated from his family and work. He said it helped him a lot...mostly just being able to talk it out with someone.
So no personal experience, but heard some good things. Suppose it depends on how good she/he is.
me too. like today, i was so hungry. so you know what i decided? time to eat! i didn't have to talk to anyone about the problem, discuss it in any committees, let them jot notes in their little legal pads. i did it all by myself.
then i was all, 'what should i eat?', which was an even bigger problem! i had this internal battle with myself. arby's! taco's! methamphetamine's! SO MANY OPTIONS!
anyways, after much internal, not external, deliberation, i figured it all out: dinosaur chicken nuggets.
don't even get me started on the oven problem i ran in to!
Thank you sloth. Normal people can figure things out for themselves. Only idiots beaurocrasize or defer to people like psychiatric experts. I believe psychiatrists are paid to tell people what they already know. So why go?
@S3THST4: I gotta say, if my parents made me see one of these people, I would fight them tooth and nail. And once I got there, I would play mind games with the psychiatrist. As Confucius says "..A man simply cannot hide himself." So don't try; by sitting ther looking pissed and simply staring out the window, you are showing him/her you have an attitude problem or you're a spoiled little brat (even if you aren't). Sit there and look like a smart ass. It's harder to psychoanalyze a smart ass than a spoiled brat. Wouldn't you agree? Plus, I don't discuss personal issues with complete strangers , or even my parents for that matter, only with a couple close confidants. I simply analyze the issue and explore various outcomes, replaying them in my head until I come to a solution that I like, at which point, I familiarize myself with that solution and problems that may arrise. It is a very analytical approach, and one that works for me.
i usually work out problems on my own, but this time i may wanna try going to a psychiatrist, who knows maybe i'll actually benefit from it, i mean i got nothing to lose in the end...and people who say that psychiatrists are useless, i disagree..psychiatrist spend their whole lives dealing with and studying the human mentality, so i guess they know what they're doing

All they do is get you to talk to them. You work out the problem on your own, they just coax it out of you. You would get the same effect if you talked to a doorknob, as long as you were honest.

True, but in the end, I believe they tell you what you already know || give you a pill. I mean, if you suffer from depression or something (to give an example), your physician should pick up a chemical imbalance and prescribe you a pill, not a psychiatrist.

Got any evidence to support this pathetic load of shit that I can't even call a rational statement?
Edit: Nevermind, your last response was all I needed to see.

You obviously do not even know what a psychiatrist is. You obviously don't even know what a physician is. Do yourself a favor, check out the definition of those terms (hint: a psychiatrist is also a physician. Pretty shocking, eh?).
I honestly have never understood people who make such bold and ridiculous claims about a subject they know not a damn thing about. Why are they doing it? *facepalm*

You're right; normal people are idiots. That invalidates my statement. Let me rephrase. Intelligent people who think for themselves can figure things out for themselves and shouldn't need others to do so. And in terms of idiots and beaurocracy, have you seen smart & ambitious people use beaurocracy for any purpose other than preventing others from progressing or slowing down the works? I can't seem to think of an example in which beaurocracy would be useful. Disprove me through examples please. And the last part about psychiatrists telling you what you already know, that is my personal opinion. I can, given enough time and meditation, can identify internal conflicts & emotions and their sources. I don't need some shrink telling me what's wrong w/me; I already know.
I'm sitting in my room, when my mom and my dad came in. they pulled up a chair and they sat down. They go “mike, we need to talk to you.” And I go “ok, whats the matter?” They go “me and your mom, we've noticed that lately you've been having a lot of problems, and you've been going off for no reason, and we're afraid you're going to hurt somebody, and we're afraid you're going to hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in you're best interest if we put you somewhere where you could get the help that you need.” And I go “wait, what are you talking about, WE decided? MY best interests? How do you know what MY best interest is? How can you say what MY best interest is? What are you trying to say? I'M crazy? When I went to YOUR schools, I went to YOUR churches, I went to YOUR institutional learning facilities. So how can you say I'M crazy?”

Good for you! But..., wait a minute? Have you forgotten about how fucked up the world outside of the one that goes on in your head is?
Have you any considerations as to the varying and quite possibly execrable, ruinous experiences that other people have been put through during their lives? Do you have any fucking clue?
Don't you remember that people; women and children get murdered, tortured, tormented, raped or otherwise sexually abused even by their own families, police and government?! Those are extreme cases, still all too often. But have you no clue as to human condition? Do you know anything about how the brain works or what actually goes on inside of one?
The fact is that if somebody was somehow traumatized at any point in life, the result of that experience is going to manifest in future thinking and behaviors. Trauma isn't limited to having something totally horrible happen to you in life. Maybe you'll understand if I put it this way... Shit Happens. Shit is happening all of the time. All of the shit that is happening is being perceived by the shit is your brain. Your shit brain is a network of 20+ billion neurons, all of them struggling to keep you alive. They do this by sending electrochemical messages. A great number of neurotransmitters work to regulate these electrical signals. But, you see, it is really all so complex that whether subjected to hellish assault and exploitation or seemingly "figuring out stuff by yourself" and living a "normal" life it is quite likely that shit will fuck up eventually. If it hasn't already, and chances are you wouldn't be very aware that it had. I am so sorry if you can't understand this, some people are just too sheltered to, but the reasons that people seek the help of psychiatrists are numerous and in most cases quite logical.
Unfortunately, and just like the rest of the medical industry, plus every other fucking one on the planet, people practicing and the institutions that contain them have their personal and financial agendas. The important thing here is that if you decide to see a psychiatrist or psychologist, just like choosing a doctor, you need to find the one who is right for you and do your own research. If you don't trust your psychiatrist OR your doctor, you need to find another one. You should also just make considerations for you health in general. People don't realize how much diet effects mood, and exercise is certainly great for relieving stress and keeping you healthy. Your brain and body in general depends on certain chemical compounds that come from what you eat, and there are some in particular that are absolutely essential for physical and psychological health that most Americans do not get in their diets.

i'm on the same page as love. my whole point earlier in the thread was that it's very easy to solve normal every day problems by yourself, but that there are crazy things out there where talking to a professional can be of help to people.
you don't have any of those kinds of issues in your life? fine, fucking congratulations, a big cookie and a certificate of accomplishment is coming your way. doesn't mean that's any sort of pass to judge people who might need that help. just makes you look like a fucking retard.
to the OP, if they are sending you, that obviously means they care about you. just go in with an open mind, if there's nothing wrong everyone will figure it out pretty quick. if there is something wrong, it might actually be beneficial. either way, you aren't in the position to come to that conclusion without giving it a fair chance.
