Microsoft has released the .Net Micro Framework 3.0.

QUOTE

The .NET Micro Framework enables faster development of more capable embedded systems that are smart, securely connected, and easier to manage. By supporting modern development tools and paradigms, .NET Micro Framework allows embedded project managers to improve productivity by bringing innovative products to market faster and at lower cost.

I for one am excited about this, and think it's definitely something to look into using, since Smart devices are becoming more and more common. What do you think?

You can download the SDK here, and get your free Porting Kit here.

That's some really nice news. First of all because .NET will now run on even more devices than it was (not only Smartphones but other smart devices). I wonder if we're going to see .NET one day replace Java or co-exist with it on non-WM (Windows Mobile) devices.

Nah, it's too late for that. However, I do see it coexisting with Java someday.

If Microsoft released a version of the CLR for as many platforms as the JRE, I could see it possibly replacing Java. I personally don't see that happening anytime soon, or ever.

Microsoft really is trying its hardest to get out there and compete. Sure is a different tone now that Steve Balmer is at the helm. When Gates was running the show, Microsoft was more methodical and calculated. Steve is like "Lets blitz everything!"

Personally I don't really care to have Microsoft on smart devices. I think Java was doing a fine job and it just worked. But it also raises questions about the .NET framework as a whole... if they could have made an edition that would fit on a smart device, why make .NET so bloated to begin with?

I should give Microsoft credit for actually trying something like this. But much of what I see them doing now a days seems as hail mary passes to try and keep their dominance.
