Are there any programmers out there who can help me out with Cocoa programming on MAC OS X. Specifically, I need help with using the Core Audio API?

I am a newbie and I am having difficulty just figuring out how to play sounds using this API.

These are the questions I have:

1) How to play a sound stored in the computer using this API?
2) How to access the master volume control for the sound being played?
3) How to implement the number of channels the sound has?

I need to ouput the sound to a firewire mixer device.
