The Windows® API Code Pack for Microsoft® .NET Framework provides support for various features of Windows 7 and previous releases of that operating system. The Code Pack has reached version 1.0 and has been published on Code Gallery.

Here is a short list of features you can use from managed code:
  • Windows 7 Taskbar Jump Lists, Icon Overlay, Progress Bar, Tabbed Thumbnails, and Thumbnail Toolbars.
  • Windows 7 Libraries, Known Folders, non-file system containers.
  • Windows Shell Search API support, a hierarchy of Shell Namespace entities, and Drag and Drop functionality for Shell Objects.
  • Direct3D 11.0, Direct3D 10.1/10.0, DXGI 1.0/1.1, Direct2D 1.0, DirectWrite, Windows Imaging Component (WIC) APIs. (DirectWrite and WIC have partial support)
  • And more .....

The code pack can be downloaded from Code Gallery

I am already actively using it. Just an advice for those who intend to try it out - it is designed to run with .NET applications directly on Windows 7. You can still develop applcations in Vista and XP, but those will not run on the older systems if you call DirectX 11, Taskbar and other Windows 7-specific elements.

It is better to either develop directly on Windows 7 or just try the new development libraries in a virtual machine.

I really hope that this code pack will be included in .NET 4.0 or atleast with the first service pack for it.
