I'm assuming that you are blaming vista. biggrin.gif
I found the following to speed things up.

1.) One of the biggest things that slows up a Vista based laptop is the start up processes.
Type msconfig in search bar and stop those start up processes.

2.) Increase the page file.
Start > Right click on "Computer" > System Properties > Advanced system settings > under Advanced tab
> click settings under performance > under Advanced tab > click on the change button > uncheck the Automatically manage page file box.

Next click on the custom radio button and set the intial size to the amount of RAM your system contains. Set the max to 3 times more RAM. e.g. if I had 2 gigabytes I would set the max to 6 gigabytes. This will increase your page file and speed things up.

Restart your computer.

If you haven't done this before and you have a lot of data on the hard drive run a disk clean up and then disk defragmentation to help the computer adapt to the new page file system.

What does the operating system have to do with your hardware overheating? Nothing.

Clean your laptop.

Make sure that the ACPI is installed in the kernel, & that it's active. If it's off, it won't detect temperatures, or change fan speeds. Everything will just... run.

I'm not familiar with the ACPI in Ubuntu, so Google "Ubuntu ACPI overheat", you may need to update the kernel, or update the OS.
