Hello all that read this, just wondering which version of Visual studio i should get?
Should i get express editions? or other (better) edition? Which is best and which year?
I sorta know how to code in VB6 as i have done a few projects but want to upgrade.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

VB6 is different to VB.net, both in code syntax and how to get them. The only (legal) way to get VB6 that I know of is buying a second-hand version.

VS express editions expire after 30 days, they are only really demos.

The 2008 editions are the best right now, but when the 2009 ones come out, you will probably want them.

(PS: If you have VB6 legally, I suggest you keep it for at least a while longer, rather than spend money on a new version of VS. VB6 can do pretty much all of what VB.net can.)

Visual Studio 2008 is an awesome IDE. If at all possible, I would go with that.

That being said, some people cant afford to do that. The Visual C++ and Visual C# express editions are great for picking up and learning the IDE and the languages. If you are going to continue with Visual Basic by changing to VB.NET the above warning are valid.. the syntax and methods of doing things I hear are a bit different. (I dont use VB .. C# for me)

I don't believe the express editions are time limited.. not absolutely sure on that.. I use the Pro editions.

Aet

Most Computer Science departments offer Visual Studio 2008 for free. That is were I picked up a copy. If you know one of your friends who is attending college they may be able to hook you up because it is very expensive.

@paperclipmuffin Actually you're incorrect. None of the Express editions expire, only the trial editions of Visual Studio. All the Express editions (C#, VB.NET, VC++ and so on) are free versions, a scaled down version of the full version of Visual Studio and do not expire.

to the OP, if you're going to pay for a version I would suggest Visual Studio 2008. With 2008 you can work with various versions of the .Net framework like 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5. With 2005 you're limited to version 2.0.

For testing I would download either the Express edition or the 30 day trial to see if it fits your needs.

I know I'm coming into this a little bit late, but I asked a similar question of a friend of mine who until very recently was on the Visual Studio development team. (In other words, he works for Microsoft and was one of the people writing Visual Studio.) He recommended that, if I didn't mind using a beta, I go with the beta test of VS 2010. I haven't tried it yet, but I thought I'd pass along the input from an insider.
