So, I have a small question about different 3D modelling programs. I have personally tried GMax and Blender a long time ago and I was thinking about getting into it again. But I don't really know which one to try, I saw a lot of different ones on the stickied thread about resources.

So, anyone know any pros/cons about the programs? biggrin.gif

Thanks!

Blender is free, has a lot of features, and is pretty widely used. It's pretty tough to learn but I doubt the other "big" ones are much better. Get a book or watch some tutorials on youtube. smile.gif

Another thing. I'm going to move on from 2D to 3D in Direct3D, so I want to be able to use my models. I'm guessing .X format meshes is the best way to do this, so the 3D program must be able to export .X format. I tried Gmax (which I used a long time ago aswell) but it doesn't seam to be able to export .X format.

Any free programs that DOES export .X files or any workaround for Gmax to export .X files? biggrin.gif

Thanks again!

I believe Blender does .X format. You can also look at Caligari Truspace, another free 3D modeling package. There are links to many in the Game Programming Resources thread at the top of the forum.

This tutorial covers making a model in Blender and exporting it to the DirectX (.X) format.

Maya is a great program, you can get the "personal learning edition" here smile.gif

Admittedly it won't do for commercial products or anything but it is a great tool anyway.
