You can also look at those full of sh*t IDEs like Aptana, RubyMine and NetBeans, but I prefer not to use bloated software. If you're familiar with VIM or Emacs, go for it. But for beginners - E-TextEditor or Intype

It has syntax highlighting, syntax checking, and function/variable highlighting, all of which you could some how implement (maybe not so nicely) in emacs/vim. again, i'm lazy...

But at the moment i use RDE. http://homepage2.nifty.com/sakazuki/rde_en/index.html Comes with syntax highlighting and well i find it quite useful at times. it's either that or Netbeans.
