I accidently downloaded a virus that hides my desktop and taskbar. I can still run programs through task manager, but I can't do anything else. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this? I've tried everything I can think of eg. restarting, hard shutdown, safe mode, stopping processes, etc.

restore point, reformat...i find that dropping your HDD in a vat of boiling acid is a great way to purge it.

Yeah ive tried Malwarebytes and Mcafee and they havent found anything. And I'm kind of looking for a quick fix if there isn't one then I'll just reformat.

Eww, Mcafee, I would strongly recommend using Avast, Kaspersky or Nod32. Mcafee and Norton are terrible. But yeah, if all else fails, might have to simply format.

PS: Stop looking at porn >_>

The explore.exe is if a game crashes or something, this is a virus. And I dont even know what system restore is, I'm just thinking about reformatting.

What? This sentence doesn't even make any sense. Can you further explain what you mean?

If you are thinking about reformatting, then I suggest just doing that. I think trying to help you troubleshoot this issue is only going to get you that much more frustrated.

Why not just reinstall using the XP CD.

Also, It doesn't look like a virus to me.

here's the process of restoring:

-Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > system restore.
-Select "restore my system to a earlier time", select a restore point(if any) and it's done!

If you don't have start menu, which I think is your case, go to task manager > New Task and paste this location %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe in the text box and click OK.

Try this before formatting. icon_up.gif

I would have suggested Hijackthis, but IDK, I suppose it would be a little more difficult to use since you have a hidden desktop and taskbar.

Although, you could more than likely navigate through the CMD prompt and run it that way.

But since your problem is fixed, it's a useless suggestion. ^.^

Cntrl + Shift + Escape will launch the task manager. File -> New Task -> http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-Hijac...4-10227353.html & download the file. File -> New Task launch hijack this from it's location.

It would also be worth having an older stand alone version of HiJackthis on a flash drive or cdrom. It used to be a much more versatile program before Trend Micro bastardized it with an installer.
