Hello. I'm a Java Programmer who likes making (and playing!) RGP/Strategy games.
I wanted to write a FFT-like game, but I don't know how to design the maps. I don't think this is the correct forum, but I couldn't really find anywhere else. If you have any suggestions for me, please let me know, this is something I really want to do.

Anyways, I wanted to use a 3D Modeling program such as Blender or GMax (I can't afford Maya......), combined with the Java 3D API. Right now, I have a 2D implementation of a FFT Style map, but I don't think I can integrate that with Java 3D.

Again, if anyone has any info for me, please share =)

Take a look at developing an isometric tile system, that should suffice for the type of game you are thinking about.

Here's some source code using SDL

A tutorial using 2D graphics with the Irrlicht Engine

Here's a great reference

Thanks for the references =)
I have a 2D Isometric Game engine that I started building, it's called JISO. The version that's up is a little outdated, and it's not as nice as the one you linked to, but I haven't had time to work on it lately.

I know that the original game was done using 3D Graphics, and I would like to be able to do it that way in my game too. (Sorry if it sounds like I'm being really suborn about this...)
