Ok, this came up in a conversation with Justin (Dark Nexus) the other day, recently for my CS classes I've started doing development on linux, last semester java and this semester C, and up to now I had been using emacs, not really thinking too much about it, but now that I'm doing C i've realized a few things. I seriously have no idea how to even cut and paste quickly. i know almost nothing about my text editor. so i've decided its time to pick one and learn it well. this is connecting to a linux box over ssh, so obviously those are the kinds of inputs im looking for, but what do you guys use? what are the pros? what are the cons? why did you switch (if ever?) fill me in damnit! i must become more efficient!

vi is the editor that has grown on me the most... Its available in any OS, Anything you have to do in it can be done through a shortcut, you will never need the mouse, it supports regex searches, and it supports macros biggrin.gif

Mastering vi was one of the best things I did...I still use it today (but often I just do it so I can be real snotty to people who don't use it! smile.gif).

I also use gedit quite a bit, on a linux front...

Editpad Lite for windows.

>but what do you guys use?
vi. Not the new fangled vim, but good old vi. smile.gif If I'm feeling especially masochistic, I dust off ed and feel the pain.

>what are the pros?
If you're good at it, you can be amazingly efficient.

>what are the cons?
It's hard to get good at it.

>why did you switch (if ever?)
I ran out of fingers when doing the key combinations in emacs.

eh, they only made us use it in the lower classes but those are the ones the MIS kids who didn't really know programming had to take. now i'm free to use what i want, and VIM is installed, so looks like i'll be trying it out.
