It depends what you wish to do. Are you interested in web programming? Application programming? Game programming? Something else? Generally speaking, people will tend to recommend their favourite language...for example, I am more likely to suggest C++ than anything else, but that does you precious little good if what you're interested in is a website.

Generaly people start with an easy language. Many start with HTML, CSS, and from there move onto languages such as VB and then to Java and/or C++.

I strongly suggest you take on a simple language first, to understand the problem solving concept, and basic structure of how computer languages work.

For general programming I'd have to go C++.

for a first language I'd reccomend php or vb (6 if you can get it, not .net).

PHP is great if you're into making websites and already know html (you also need a server and stuff). The systax is also similar to c/c++/java but it is much, much easier for a newbie programmer to get into.

VB is a "weak" language, but it's easy to get into, and well suited to making desktop applications fast. The thing with vb though, is that while it's easy to learn, and you can do some pretty cool things with it, it's not a very good language for anything but learning. There aren't that many *good* applications written in vb availible. most people seem to move on to other languages before they have the skills to write a large application.

I'd learn VB , I don't know what everyone's got against it!
I think it's a cool language and it's fairly easy to make some good applications. It was my first language back when I was like 11 and I still think it's pretty good. C* is hard to get into if your just starting coding so you should steer away from that. If you don't want to do VB you should do PHP . In both languages after you've done only a few hours work you can sit back and go " wow... I made that!"

Do we have to list all the reasons why C++ is better than VB, and why VB is so disliked?

It is good to learn VB if you are just starting programming, but definitly a bad language compared to other languages. C++ is infact hard to understand if you don't have any previous experience with programming, but C# is very easy to understand for beginers. Everything is well structed and well organized in namespaces and classes. It is a very good language to learn OOP with, because it shows in an easy to understand way how OOP is used and its positive sides.
