depends what language your looking to learn.
Java is a resonably easy language to pick up, you can get jCreator (free version) and lots of tutorials on the sun.java site

C++ is still the standard in most things, for it's versatility on OS's and multiple inheritance smile.gif

I'm going to repeat William_Wilson here, as his point is excellent and I think it bears emphasis...before choosing a development tool (not that any are required, you can write programs in any language simply in notepad or any text editor), you would be well advised to choose which language you wish to program in. There are several IDEs that support multiple languages, but many more that are language specific.
