GreyMagic has uncoverd a flaw in Netscape and Mozilla browsers that could allow some one to view local files. The flaw, same as one discovered in Dec. 2001 for IE6, is a component for retrieving XML documents from a Web server, known as XMLHTTP. It can be used to read local files by blingly following server-side redirections.

GreyMagic tested Netscape 6.1 and 6.2 on Windows2000 and NT4, Mozilla 0.9.7 on NT4, and Mozilla 0.9.9 on Windows2000 and NT4. All were found to be vunerable.

The bug was found at the end of March and reported to the browser makers, and was today released to the public as a warning.

Netscape has yet to issue a patch.

You can read the full security alert from GreyMagic here.
