Hi
I got this online edition of "Tricks of the java programming gurus". I read the contents(chapters) to see what's about and it's got a bunch of cool topics. Then I saw the year, 1996. Are n't there any other books that cover the same topics, but just not so old?

It might be still good. If you know what changed to the Java language then you just have to change what the book says, if they are doing an example or something. The ideas are probably the same.

I did a quick search and found this (which I think is what you're referring to): http://docs.rinet.ru/JaTricks/

I must say that it does look like a lot of good stuff, but the fact that it's so dated will make some of it pretty useless. In the intro, it's talking about Java being around for only about a year, and the current version being 1.0.

My advice would be to look around for more recent books. There are plenty of ebooks out there worth stealing that will help you learn whatever you want in java.

If you are looking for free e-books, then look no further than the following post compiled by our very own Webmaster, skyhawk133.

Lots more Java, including the one you mentioned. Some of them are a bit dated, but I am sure you will find some that are more current.

You might also check out the freebie, Thinking in Java, 3rd Edition found at the following link.

And the blueprints by Sun are also very helpful, because they discuss how the design and specification was made. Also, they are available for free.
