i'm working on a system which will run on mobile devices. its for mobile insurance sales agents. the system will basically connect the mobile device of the agent to the backend of insurance firm so the agent can access the firm's database, applications....

this is basically a college project so i need to develop the insurance firm's system running on the server and the system that will run on the mobile device of the agents which will connect to the firm's infrastructure.

there are thousands of options available for development tools out there like j2me but does anyone have some suggestions on which development tools could be best for this project or any good mobile computing books i can use? thanks for the audience

NetBeans with the mobility pack is a nice integrated tool, I've used it, and I like it.
However if you are familiar with some other IDE, I think you should have no problem with installing the required extensions/APIs to use it with them.

Right now I can't remember what book I've used, but I think it was published by Addison-Wesley.

you can use the microsoft mobile .net framework. The documentation on msdn is really good, and if you use VS.net they have emulation tools for the applications for the mobile devices.

Actually the whole thing depends on what kind of hardware do you have to work with. I think the .net framework is available just for very few smartphones with windows mobile, however j2me is accesible even on most cheap cellphones (just check the supported jsrs in advance, so you won't be surpriesed if something won't work).

i have downloaded the netbeans mobility pack along with the IDE. i actually found a book titled "NetBeans IDE Field Guide". i schemed through it & it seems to give a good tutorial on building both j2me and j2ee applications. since most phones support Java, i think its the way i will go. if anyone knows of any books or links that will be of use for my project, please let me know. thanks!!!
