While I can't recommend any books, I will recommend that you check out php.net, as it reads similar to a php manual.

A bit of advice. I am also a c/c++ programmer, & was told a switch to php was seamless. This is bunk when it comes to arrays. Maybe it's just me, but the way php handles arrays is wacky. Best of luck.

When I first began with PHP
I used a video tutorial website

link here

This really helped me begin using PHP and develop my own projects.
It's a nice Australian guy who does the tutorials who adds little jokes in there, so it's not all pure coding and work.
He does a good job.

Video tutorial is the fastest way to learn
But If you're looking for an e-book, try this www.zaksdg.110mb.com
I hope it'll be helpful to you
Beside 110mb.com is a good place to test your php files (it's free php web host)

php is good

PHP is a really easy scripting language to learn.
The basics are very simple.

I suggest doing the tutorials at w3schools.com to learn the basics, and then just read up on php.net to learn the more advance features of the language.
