If you go and look at the php.net page it will go into more descriptions for each and every one. This is because they are maintaining it all on their site. They also have examples from users that post them for the function to show real life examples. It helped me a great deal for school when I needed reference.

When I first tried to learn php online, I was really discouraged by the amount of things to learn. May I suggest you get a book, its how I learned.
