When you're designing and developing new software systems, it is often hard to see how all the pieces are suppose to fit together. Unified Modeling Language (UML) is one tool that allow developers and architects to ease the process and create a big picture before committing to a particular technology.

as an MIS major I learned a lot about UML diagrams. It is amazing how well they can help a project flow and how they can help avoid scope creep and general misunderstandings.

they really help the customer to get what they wanted and it helps you understand what it is they want and them understand what it is that they're asking for.

they help avoid this:

we had to do UML diagrams in my database classes, I understand the idea behind them, but they should really be introduced in first year instead of 3rd, lol

I agree. Where I work, the documentation is not the best (due to a lack of staff when the code written), so one anytime a section gets rebuilt/reworked, someone gets the fun job of doing use case diagrams. I often see use case diagrams in RDDs as well, but rarely do I see class diagrams. Sure would have made getting up t speed on the code faster. But it's one of those things that, if you complain you end up getting nominated to do it. No thanks. smile.gif
