How to access elements of a text file in PERL .

Hi all,

i wanna access elements of a text file columnwise just like in matrices.

ex: a text file contains the below strings as elements.

a apple +
b book +
c cat _
d dog _


............and so on.

now i want to access each element individually just like in a matrix.
could anybody help with this.
