Im using a book called PHP in 24 hours its the third addition and it covers php 4.3. Its Sams teach yourself. By I think Matt zandstra, Is this a good book to be using to learn php?

Also any tips for someone who is begining to learn php, such as websites/personal knowledge/ utilities, so fourth.

I also usually recommend W3 for beginners for php...not bad at all.

Well I'll sound a little old fashioned here, but I personally prefer a book for from-the-scratch learning. The book you are using is quite ok, however for a slightly more thorough discourse on the subject I recommend PHP and MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson. Its a great book with a lot of really practical coding tips.
