Start a project then google or ask help for problems you encounter. That's how I learned Java.

To undseratand the java thoroughly you need to have the concept of c and c++. If u have the knowledge of these two learning java will be enjoyable. java is a platform independent programming language unlike the c and c++.

Java is a very easy language to learn. I've found the bluej libraries very helpful. check it out. bluej.org. also they have the packages you may need to download to get started. i use j2sdk1.2.4_14 and the bluej writing platform, but they have more recent sdk editions and better writing platforms than bluej.
