I don't really know all that much about the theory either. But in my mind I imagine that this is actually quite involved. I mean you have to find some common data format that you can use to compare different palm prints... there has to be some room for error. Now lets see, I have a degree in mathematics, and over 15 years of experience as a programmer (granted I don't know too much about matlab) but I would imagine that such a project would take a few weeks. Give or take a little depending upon the capabilities of matlab.

This is done simply my identifying some control points which are available on every human face. The ratios between various lengths form a fairly unique metric. Figure-print and palm print recognition involves locating singularities, bifurcations, and variations in slope. Oddly enough a search of Google returned a matlab library for palm print recognition.
