I've thought of learning ADA, since I'm going to finish FORTRAN soon. I just wanted to know. Is it just an ancient language which is used just because a lot of people know it? If no, where is it used exactly? I'm not looking into developing software related to the IT side. My stream is electronics and communication. C, C++, Fortran and assembly -which I've yet to learn, are, as I have found, very usefull in my field. So what about fortran? (My dad's an engineer in the same field as well and he told me that they used ADA, Fortran and C a lot in their time).

Thanks smile.gif

I've just heard of ADA being used in the field of avionics (although I'm sure there are more).

As for FORTRAN, if it wasn't for the NAGs (Numerical Assessment Group Libraries) it'd be dead.

That's another reason why ADA and FORTRAN are still used. Experienced Engineers would prefer programming in ADA or FORTRAN since they have been using it right from their days as a student. To pick up a new language and (most importantly) to master it at that age isn't easy.

This is a neat Tutorial for C++ Programmers Learning ADA. I'm sure you'll find it useful.

ADA... I did a little bit of ADA once upon a time. It is still around. I think there is a new version of it somewhere out there. From what I remember, the main reason ADA was so terribly popular was that the US DoD used it for many projects so many contractors used it and things trickle down from there. I think I have read a great deal of buzz about ADA in the language design articles I have read in the last few years, so I expect to see more ada-ish features in some of the modern languages.

Yeah, I did find GNAT - Ada Compiler and a good ada tutorial. But what I wanted to know is how it is used. Take FORTRAN for example: Its primary purpose is math.
