I searched and found a few topics regarding learning pearl and starting out. A few of them referenced sites that listed books to learn with, but i want personal experience from people not a list of books to randomly choose from.

Basically, I need to learn Perl.

I heard the the o'reileys book has a lot of unix related commands in it. Since i'm weak at unix that would be painful for me to learn with. Is this true? Also i heard about a book called "Beginning Pearl, Second Edition" and was wondering if anyone had experience with it. I currently can program in Java used to do VB but forgot most of it. So i have a background in programming just not in Unix or Perl.

Thanks for you time!

"Learning Perl" is a great book if you're just starting out. It's what I started with, and a lot of other Perl developers will tell you that it's what they started with too.

"Beginning Perl" is good.
"Learning Perl" is also very good.

Get the "Perl Bookshelf Reference" on CD. It comes with 5 or 6 perl books, Learning Perl is one of them. You can get used copies for a few dollars on amazon.com

perl is not a platform specific language, so there should not be too much platform specific commands - there may be a few, but I'm sure there'd be explanations. In any case, any command could be researched pretty easily. Some of perl was developed from functionality on the UNIX shell, but it can all be translated.

When I was first starting, I had no linux experience at all - they explained how I could get Perl working on a windows computer, and there wasn't anything that didn't get explained.

There are a few Unix/Linux terms at best. Some perl functions are named after Unix functions, like "grep" and "sort" but they are perl functions, not Unix functions.
