Haven't seen a SCJP cert for Java 6 yet. An SCJP prep book (as you've discovered) is not a beginner book. The Deitel "Java How To Program" books are excellent for beginners. I have reviewed the 6th and 7th edition of this book (Java 5 and Java 6 respectively) and I can tell you that there is almost no difference in the core Java technologies from one book to another. In fact, the chapters and code examples are almost identical except for an extra chapter or two near the end of the book. And those chapters are mostly Netbeans tutorials (something you can find for free on the web). Frankly I was disappointed with how little had been added If I were you I'd buy the 6th edition. I have a copy of both and would be willing to part with the 6th edition for a reasonable price, if you want it. Otherwise, check amazon.com.
thank you for your answer and offer.because it might take awhile to ship the book over here(netherlands) i'll look for the book over here as i need the book urgent for my exam preparation while in short vacancies.
