I have mixed feelings on the "thanks boss" remark. Sometimes, it just seems very condescending and non-genuine. But I'm also not a fan of "Mr." or "Sir" when people talk to me.
How do you prefer to be addressed? I just prefer people use my first name, or even my last name, but not a fan of "Boss" or "Mr." or "Sir"
Yeah, I know when I use it I'm not very sincere about it usually, though it's very rare that I do. I prefer people use my first name, and I've noticed that usually the bosses that I've had are like that.
Edit: unless it's on the internetz, then my alias is usually the best practice.

Personally, in terms of "Mr." or my first or last name, I don't much prefer how people address me. though that's not how I address others.
For me, much of it depends on the situation, how well I know the person, and how "buddy-buddy" we are. Typically if I don't know them well, I'll use an honorific along with their first or last name.
I have always considered "sir" for old guys and when people have used it with me, it makes me notice but I don't really mind. I think it is just awkward being called Mr unless it is by some young kid on a bike and just came back from the sand lot where he was playing baseball. Then expect other words like "Gee" as "Gee Mr, you are one leet hacker aren't you?"
But I guess if the person doesn't know you (like the checker at the supermarket) they only have two choices... sir or mr. Since they don't know your name (unless the checker was hot and you were hitting on her in the frozen foods isle) they don't have choice but to use one of the two.
But if they know me, they can just use my first name.
Btw... Being called Boss is just lame and I hate it. Even when I was the boss I never liked to be thought of as a boss, but as a colleague. When I have the power, I still prefer to be working side by side with those under me. It makes things much less harsh and a more lively environment.

What would be acceptable then? Sexy? Baby?
You would have to play it by ear and see how she reacts. You don't want to call her sexy and get some charges slapped on you for sexual harassment. You could always call her sweet pea and if she has a problem and freaks out on you, you could be clever and say something like "No no, I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about the bag of sweet peas behind you. Geesh, you need to get over yourself, we are in the frozen food isle"
Typically for me, if its someone I only see once (i.e. cashiers, servers, etc) then I just let them call me sir or mr, whichever. However, if someone I expect to see more than once, I usually just tell them to call me by my first name or my nick name. Amusing story actually on this one, a friend of mine in high school (who was filthy rich, yes) had a maid that helped clean around his house. It bugged the living bejesus out of me when she referred to me as "Mr. Hylton" and after I finally broke her of it, his dad heard her call me by my first name and started to get mad (he didn't know that I had told her to call me by my first name). Thankfully, I was there to explain the situation to him, or else that could've got messy. Moral of the story, I let people call me what they want if they're stubborn about it.
For me, I like that they call me in my first name or nickname. However, I am working in the company who observes proper decorum, so we must call our superiors as Sir or Ma'am, so as my subordinates call me Sir, but in vice versa you can call your subordinates their first name.
I also observe the hospitals here. The doctors ( resident or consultant ) call their staff nurses as Sir or Ma'am and the nurses call them as Doc.

mmk I am a girl and I would think that was totally lame, roll my eyes and give you a pfft laugh as I was walking away....
FYI
oh yeah and I hate miss or mrs or any of that crap...first name is fine...
I don't normally call anyone mrs/miss/mr ever...accept little girls toddler age...they are miss so and so...oh wait I call my dads boss...my old boss...Mr. because since I was a young child he was always Mr. Bolls, and to this day I still have a hard time and feel really funny calling him Jack. But other than that there is no one, not even old strangers I call mr/mrs

I'm not so much interested in what they say as how they say it...
People can make themselves say anything they want, but are rarely aware enough of their body language to control it, so without knowing it, they have told you a lot more than they realize.
