Let me say it again

I know absolutely nothing about game programing
But I really want to do it...business software is boring....

So where should I start?

Books-websites...remember...absolutely NOTHING at all what so ever

My knowledge spans from websites to business software in OOP, I don't know C++ at all...but I have done some Java...but I have worked most recently w/ PHP and CF

What are some must knows before I dive into game programming?

If you know some Java I would recommend learning applets. There are lots of things you can do with applets to create games. If I were you I would also do some research on OpenGL.

I would recommend using a newbie tool such as 3DGameStudio or GameMaker before hitting the code.

I was thinking about just picking up C++ first and then moving forward with games...what do you guys think about this list?

I guess what I would like to know, is if I were going to say go to school for game programming...how is it first presented...I would like some book suggestions to game theory...there is so much on amazon it makes my head spin, i don't know whats crap and whats not. I have a degree in software engineering, I can learn it on my own..hell I got my degree on my own..I just need to know where to start...if any of you out there have actually perused a degree in game programming or you just know of some good books... please post them

As far as game design goes, I've read some books on just video game design. Worthless. Just read my project log entry on game design, I tell you all you need to know. But if you must, there's nothing better than analyzing games you like.

If you have a lot of experience with software development already, then you should just start by coding. Game programming isn't vastly different, though you'll find there are some changes to how you'll want to structure your code.

I strongly recommend AVOIDING programs like GameMaker if you want to learn how a game actually works, instead of just creating content for an existing system.

Make a simple skeleton frame with the initilization, graphics rendering, game logic and data clearly organized and seperate. Once you have that throw in some content and make a simple tic tac toe or breakout or anything really simple.
