Hello guys, here is my situation: I have a blog with users, and since the site is free I'd like to have some ads on it so I can at least earn some money for my hard work (and to pay for the site's hosting). I was considering having a donate button (or page) but then I knew AdSense was supposed to be good. I was wondering what is the best way to maximize revenue using ads on my site (and I don't have money to spend on advertising yet)? Is adsense definitely the best? or mix adsense with another form of ads? Thanks for any help you can give!!

PS - Is the donate button/page a good idea?

I would say that you should either ask for donations, or have advertisements, but not both - unless donating means that they don't see the ads anymore.

You might want to take a look at advertising systems where people pay you based on the number of impressions - I've got adsense set up on a couple projects, and because you only get paid when people click the ads, you can have 10,000 pageviews go by without a single cent earned - because no one clicked on the ads.

I've heard that text link ads is pretty good for blogs, but I don't really know enough about it to give an informed opinion(and I'm sure someone who knows a little more will correct me on something I've already written), so my advice would be to check out the alternatives to getting paid for each click on the ad.

If you are an American resident you can sign up to Yahoo! Publishing Network (YPN) which is supposed to pay more per click (from what I've heard) than adsense.

I am an American resident biggrin.gif would it be smart to combine using YPN with the thing that pays you for impressions? (also, I don't know how to make it so that the ads go away when an individual person donates.. but Dream.in.Code is smart as HELL for making that!

Stick to what you know and keep writing. Sign up with Google Adsence and maybe even Adbrite. I wouldn't go hog wild on it, and clicks will start to come through. It just take time. But don't expect anything more than 2% CTR.

Just paste it into a text widget.

Go to Presentation->Widgets, and then drag a "text" widget onto your widget area - you can then click the strange little picture in the right corner of the widget to modify the text inside of it - which is where you would paste your adbrite code.

Edit: you will need to keep in mind, however, that by dragging a widget you are defining what your entire sidebar looks like - so you'll need to re-add anything you had in your sidebar before that you want to keep.
