I would say for starters, have solid foudation in another programming language. That would be hard, for me at least, to grasp when trying to learn programming of such a complexity.

PERL isn't all that complex of a language... even if you want to get into OO and stuff it is still a lot simpler than c++. I would say to get a decent book and just jump right in, if you have an understanding of other unix derived languages (php,bash...) it shouldn't be very hard...

Cheers Sam

Perl in a Nutshell is more of a reference book... not great if you don't know the language at all!

Get the standard, "Programming Perl" from O'Reilly.

also, wdvl.com has some decent tutorials (emphasis on the word "decent", not "great").

ps: I'm not sure it's wise to be hoping for an "easy" way to learn Perl. :P

yes, and perl's not exactly an easy language. not really hard, but tougher than most languages that are strictly web (since perl is not designed to be strictly web, so it has a lot more to it than most web languages).

Perl is really versatile. It was originally created a system administration tool, you can do all kinds of things with it, I know people that use it for network management and others that use it for shell scripting.
